A description of the story and some of it's meanings
Chapter one is a dark, almost foreboding chapter full of mystery and intrigue. In this chapter the club is initiating Morgan into the club. But wait! Isn't that what the book is about in the first place? How did we get here so fast? This is a flash forward, and doesn't give away the real story. But it does let us know the club has it's rivals who are spying on them as they initiate Morgan. One of the main themes of the story is this rivalry, which will come up again and again throughout the book. Later, you'll read about the events depicted in this dark chapter again, from a very different viewpoint.
But first you must meet Aunt Rosie, Injun Jim, Morgan's father, Charlie House and his horse Abner. You will also hear about the racing crowd that wants Charlie to put Abner up against Midnight, the town champion.
Then there's the corrupt Judge Olsen, head of the local Night Riders, and Wayne Carson, the town bully, not to mention Mr. Brown, Morgan's father who doesn't want Morgan to join the club at all, ever. All of these things converge to lead Joe to the conclusion they must have a secret initiation, and they must go see Aunt Rosie, the Voodoo Priestess from Haiti to get some magic. They also need a good ceremony for the initiation and Injun Jim might be able to help with that. Things will be spoiled though, by spies, a runaway horse and midnight revelers.
But Joe and The Tarzan Club are resourceful and somehow it will come out alright in the end.
